Culinary Exploration at The Plaza

Category: Culinary

Author: Kevin Smith, Culinary Director

For numerous chefs, there exists a pivotal cookbook that served as the catalyst for their culinary journey. This single book ignited an idea, unlocking a passion for cooking they may not have realized they possessed. Cookbooks transcend mere collections of recipes; they serve as windows into cultures, histories, and personal narratives. With each page turn, a new adventure, tradition, or innovative technique unfolds.

Every recipe and cookbook, whether passed down through generations or reimagined, enriches our culinary culture at The Plaza at Wildwood Senior Living. Exploring culinary resources nurtures and evolves our love for food and cooking.

I own approximately 75 books in my current cookbook collection.
Among them, my favorite is titled “A Life by the Sea.” What I love most about that book is its many wonderful seafood recipes and great photos of small fishing villages.

To capture my interest, a cookbook must offer a diverse collection of recipes and include great photos.

My grandfather handed down a hand-written recipe for Tabasco sauce. One of my favorite recipes that I’ve developed is Christmas eggnog.

Christmas Eggnog

  • 6 Large Egg Yolks
  • ½ C. Sugar
  • 1 C. Heavy Cream
  • 2 C. Milk
  • ½ tsp Nutmeg
  • ¼ tsp Salt
  • ½ C. Dark Rum
  • ½ C. Brandy
  1. Wisk egg yolks and sugar together until light and creamy.
  2. In separate pan over medium heat combine cream, milk, nutmeg, and salt. Stir until simmer.
  3. Temper egg mixture with simmering liquids.
  4. Return to stove once slightly thickened. Remove from heat.
  5. Then, stir in vanilla and alcohol.
  6. Refrigerate overnight, top with whipped cream and nutmeg.

Generational recipes or new culinary creations can spark nostalgia and inspire our cooking journey. Whether you’re a seasoned chef or a home cook, we all have that one foolproof recipe. Don’t overlook the power of beloved cookbooks and their stories. Keep sharing and savoring the diverse flavors that await us.
